Rudolph Pretorius was born on a farm in the Southern Free State. As a boy, he roamed freely and drank in the symphony of colours and tones of the surrounding landscapes. With this yielding to the free open accepting spaces of nature, he took an inspired leap into the world of creativity and started to capture his newfound love on canvas.
Now, his work comprises mainly of landscapes, portraits, still life, figures, and abstracts. The main purpose of his art is to express and share this timeless spiritual connection of humankind with nature by utilising mediums of oil, pencil and acrylic. In his unique impressionistic and realistic style, Rudolph applies sensitive use of colour to portray glorious clouds and skyscapes.
Most of his skills were self-taught by attending courses and workshops of successful South African artists. However, Rudolph fell in love with the magical world of painting in oil, as introduced by the well-known artist and good friend, the belated Richard Rennie.
